Smart sustainability reaches new heights

An icon of multi-use style

The city of Saltillo in Mexico is rapidly becoming a hub for 21st century industries, from aerospace to automotive and more. In the north of the city, the iconic new mixed-use neighborhood Distrito Karena is taking shape, with the Moranta Tower as its centerpiece. This building elevates smart sustainability to new heights as Mexico’s first building made fully out of Holcim’s ECOPact concrete.

The 21-floor mixed-use Moranta Tower provides 106 apartments, as well as commercial and office spaces and a wide range of amenities. The site focuses on residents’ safety, comfort and well-being and ensures the whole community can benefit from the tower’s green spaces. Holcim’s SMARTCast technology and Holcim+ platform were integral to the project.

Sustainability

Driving sustainable performance

As the first fully ECOPact project in Mexico, the Moranta Tower has 1,520 fewer tons of CO2 embedded in its superstructure than a comparable building using traditional concrete mixes. Holcim worked with Grupo DAGS to drive low-carbon and digital construction throughout the design and building process. Together, they met their sustainability objectives and delivered 100% performance for this groundbreaking project.

Digitalization

Unmatched technical progress

Holcim’s innovative building solutions ensured the project’s smooth construction process. In particular, our SMARTCast technology allowed the builders to optimize the concrete mix design before they even began pouring. This increased efficiency and leveled up the sustainability of the project.

Partnership

Breaking new ground

The Moranta Tower represents a cutting-edge collaboration between the project’s developer Grupo DAGS and Holcim. This project marked the first time Holcim offered an integrated, full-service model that combined advanced technology with traditional testing. By building a strong, trusted relationship with Grupo DAGS, this collaboration set a new benchmark for how Holcim delivers solutions – not just materials – to our customers.

Materials

Enabling excellence

ECOPact is the world’s broadest range of low-carbon concrete. With its innovative mix design of supplementary cementitious materials and admixture technology, it reduces the embodied carbon of buildings by at least 30% without offsets compared to traditional mix designs.

SMARTCast sensors installed in concrete can measure its temperature and assess its strength in real time. Thanks to this data, customers can ensure faster, more efficient and sustainable construction. Grupo DAGS was able to speed up the construction cycle for the building’s slabs by 24 hours per pour. As a result, workers could remove the formwork at the 48-hours mark, rather than the normal 72, saving time and money.

Grupo DAGS used Holcim’s innovative digital platform, HOLCIM+, to manage and track concrete orders, ensuring transparency, efficiency and seamless coordination with the construction team. The platform thus enabled a smooth, streamlined construction journey.
